Visiting Fairchild Tropic Botanic Garden

Summer is in full swing and you know what that means... it's time for a trip to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden! Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is one of Florida’s best botanic gardens. This eighty-three acre garden has been open since 1938 and offers visitors quite a sight of gardens, rare tropical plants, flowering trees, tropical fruit trees, vines, and more. You are sure to love their beautiful paths and exhibits.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden would only be a short drive for you in your Fort Lauderdale car rental. Visit any day between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Admission is $25 for adults, $12 for children ages 6-17, and free for children five and under. They also offer a $2 discount per person for those who are AAA visitors. Walking the grounds will introduce you to a large variety of tropical plants and their amazing array of sizes and shapes. The garden includes many collections and displays such as the tropical flower garden, spiny forest of Madagascar, rainforest, vine pergola, Victoria amazonica pool, butterfly garden, palmetum, tropical fruit pavilion, conservatory, Bailey Palm Glade, Jewels of the Caribbean, and the Keys Coastal Habitat.

You should allow at least two hours to tour this entire Florida garden. If you get tired, there are lots of benches found throughout the garden. Before setting out to see all the flowers, it might be helpful for you to pick up a copy of the list of plants on your tour at the information desk.

Open-air tram tours are a way to learn about the flowers and the property. These start at 10:00 a.m. and the last tour ends at 3:00 p.m. each day. You will want to allow about 45 minutes for your tour. These are lead by trained volunteers and give you an excellent overview of the garden. This would be a great way to figure out which parts of the garden you wish to explore later on your own.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden exhibits can be found throughout the garden. Check out Window to the Tropics. This conservatory has over 1,900 species of plants from the tropics. You’ll see two levels of palms, cycads, ferns, orchids, fruit trees, and aroids.

The Montgomery Palmetum is world-famous for its collection of palms from throughout the world. You are sure to see some unique and rare palms as you walk through this exhibit. Walk through the Richard H. Simons Rainforest where you will see a waterfall and two acres of Latin American and rainforest species.

After enjoying the beautiful scenery the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has to offer, don’t forget about the gift shop! The Shop at Fairchild offers the most extensive array of botanical and horticultural books in the region, with a wide selection on various plant families, gardening, landscape design, natural history and the environment of South Florida and the tropics.
